Application and Hands-On Activity
Exploring Sequences and Series with Starbursts
Including hands-on activities in a classroom is important when students are constructing knowledge on a given topic. Hands-on activities provide students with the opportunity to learn in various ways: visually, auditory, and physically. During these activities students are actively participating in the lesson rather than passively learning new materials. While students are actively learning new content, they are also working on developing their problem solving and critical thinking skills.

In the starburst activity provided below, the students use manipulative to discover the relationship between various figures. The students can physically manipulate the starburst to explore the properties of each figure and make predictions about the next figure in the sequence. Based on the data they gathered, the students will have the means to create a formula describing the relationship they discovered.
